Radon in the Home

RADON MITIGATION IN THE PNW

THE FIRST STEP IS HAVING YOUR HOME TESTED FOR RADON

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is produced through the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It has no odor, can't be seen, and has no taste. However, it is in the soil that so many homes are built into, and this toxic gas to leaching into the air we breath in our homes. According to the Surgeon General, it is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, second only to smoking.

Since Radon is within the soil, it is a regionalized issue, meaning if one house has high levels of Radon, the neighboring houses are at an increased risk since they share similar soil. Within recent years, the Oregon Health Authority has been collecting data on Radon levels, and while it is an ongoing study, they do have a generalized list of Radon Risk in Oregon. This can give a glimpse at radon levels in your area, but, it does recognize that levels can vary within zip codes. The only way to truly determine if you and your family are at risk, is to test your homes radon levels.

To have your home tested, there are three routes. Firstly, you can purchase a do-it-yourself kit from a local hardware store, these provide a quick snapshot of what your homes radon levels look like, but do note, radon levels fluctuate and this only provides a snapshot. Secondly, you may purchase a consumer grade radon detector for continual at home monitoring, these come in varying price ranges. Lastly you can have e a qualified Radon Measurement Specialist do the work for you. Any of these options can be great to give you an idea of what your homes radon levels are.
