Foundation Repair Photo Album: Repair of Severely Crumbling Foundation Wall - Salem, OR
The owners of this home called on John's to inspect their concrete foundation wall that was crumbling so badly that they had to support it with sand bags. We greatly understood the severity of this issue, and sent a Design Specialist to the home to begin mediation of the compromised foundation. After inspecting, our Design Specialist explained that the best solution was to remove the crumbled portion of the wall, and pour a concrete extension onto the remaining sound portion, to return stability to the entire wall. The homeowners were delighted to have a solution, and were eager to have the work started, so we got them on our schedule. When our Structural Crew arrived to complete the work, the first step was to dig out and remove the crumbling portion of the old foundation wall, as well as all debris in the work area. After the site was clean, we replaced the dug out area with compacted gravel. Directly onto the remaining, sound portion of the foundation wall, we placed a heavy-duty vapor barrier, to protect the new extension from hydrostatic pressure. Next, we built the forms for the new foundation wall extension, ensuring that the newly poured wall would attach firmly to the existing. To maximize cohesion of the old and new wall, we also attached parallel rebar stakes onto the old wall, to hold the extension in place. After the new concrete solidified, we removed the forms, and then washed it - leaving behind a beautiful and sturdy foundation wall to support the home! The foundation of this home is strong and stable once again, protecting the entire structure of the home, as well as the family within!
Before Photo of Crumbling Foundation Held Up With Sand Bags
This foundation wall was crumbling so badly that it had to be supported with sand bags to keep it from collapsing entirely.
Placement of Vapor Barrier
We placed a heavy duty vapor barrier onto the sound portion of the original wall, to ensure that no hydrostatic pressure would enter the new foundation wall extension.
Rebar Placement
We attached rebar rods directly onto the original foundation wall, to help hold the new concrete extension firmly in place.
Newly Poured Foundation Wall Extension
The top of the new foundation extension is flush with the top of the original.
Concrete Forms
We built the concrete forms using pressure, to make sure that the new extension would attach strongly to the original foundation wall.
