Insulation Photo Album: Fix Your Cold Floors with Encapsulation - Ronald, WA
This homeowner started noticing that their floors were always cold. No matter how high the heating system was, they couldn't seem to warm up their floors. Knowing that this meant something was wrong with their homes insulation, they decided to call John's Waterproofing. Upon our inspection, we found that the fiberglass insulation in the crawl space was completely detached from the sub-floor. This was due to standing water in the crawl space evaporating into the air and being absorbed by the homes materials. Even the wooden posts supporting the homes foundation had significant water damage. The best long-term solution to this water issue is encapsulating the crawl space. First, we have to remove all insulation and the damaged vapor barrier. Then, we installed a drainage system using a perforated pipe. This goes along the interior perimeter of the crawl space and acts as a safe passageway for water to be collected and sent to a SuperSump Plus sump pump. From there, the sump pump can push all that water out of the crawl space and away from the homes foundation. Once we knew that the crawl space could remain dry, it was time to fix the insulation situation. TerraBlock is a 3/4 inch thick insulation foam. This goes along the base of the crawl space floor and seals the earth off from the home. It helps to regulate the environment in the space, which as a result, helps promote better energy efficiency. This keeps the crawl space around the same temperature and the heating/cooling systems don't have to work as hard to keep up with the earth's changing climate. Afterwards, a CleanSpace vapor barrier is installed on top of the TerraBlock. This is a 20 mil thick liner made with woven fibers that prevent water from being able to seep over top. A SaniDry dehumidifier is installed to promote healthier air quality by pulling excess moisture out of the air. Lastly, another type of insulation is installed; Spray Foam. This goes along the foundation walls and is made of materials that expand to fill into every crack. It can insulate the crawl space while also completely air sealing. Now this homeowner can enjoy the benefits of a encapsulated crawl space, including keeping the floors warm.
Moisture Damage Caused Insulation to Sag.
When water enters the crawl space and evaporates into the air, it gets absorbed by the fiberglass insulation. This causes it to fall from the sub-floor, negating its purpose of insulating the home.
Standing Water and Mud on the Vapor Barrier.
The original vapor barrier was completely covered in dirt and debris due to standing water.
Sealing the Crawl Space with CleanSpace.
The CleanSpace vapor barrier is installed along the base, up the foundation walls, and between the footing and wooden posts to isolate and protect against water damage.
Cleaning Up the Space.
Once it is fully encpasulated, the crawl space has a new and clean look that will also remain healthy for the home.
