Insulation Photo Album: Fixing Your Homes Insulation - Albany, OR
The purpose of insulation in the crawl space is to help promote energy efficiency, prevent moisture problems, and improve the indoor air quality. In some situations, if the crawl space experiences significant water intrusion it can damage the homes insulation. That was the case for this homeowner when water was seeping through their foundation and evaporated into their fiberglass insulation that was attached to the sub-floor. It caused it to weaken and sag, negating its purpose of being able to properly insulate the home. The homeowners decided to reach out to John's Waterproofing about our insulation installation process and how we could prevent this from happening again. In an encapsulation, we install two different foams of insulation that work together that will not succumb to rot or mold. It offers a long-term alternative to the traditional fiberglass. The first type of insulation used is TerraBlock. This is a 3/4 inch thick foam that goes along the crawl space floor. It seals the home off from the earth and improves energy efficiency by keeping the temperature the same all year. This way the heating/cooling systems don't have to work as hard to keep up with the changing outdoor climate. To complete the crawl space insulation in an encapsulation, we apply spray foam insulation along the foundation walls. This is a material that expands to fit into every crack or crevice. It's function ensures that the crawl space is completely air sealed and insulated. By installing a full encapsulation, this helps the homes overall health and can keep it dry and comfortable all year round.
Fallen Fiberglass Insulation.
Fiberglass becomes loose and sags from the sub-floor if it is exposed to a high moisture content in the crawl space. This can be dangerous because it can't insulate the home and can increase the risk of mold growth.
Insulation Like This Can be Hazardous.
By keeping insulation in the crawl space that looks like this, it can result in musty odors and even an increase in rodent activity. The materials that fiberglass is made of make it irreparable if exposed to moisture.
Cleaning Up and Insulating.
Along the base of the crawl space floor, TerraBlock and a CleanSpace vapor barrier is installed. These both work to insulate and seal the crawl space off from the outside elements so that it can stay healthy.
Spray Foam as the Best Insulation Alternative.
Spray Foam is applied to the foundation walls and expands to fit into every crack and crevice. It is capable of air sealing the crawl space and properly insulating the home.
