Radon Gas Mitigation Photo Album: How Radon is Impacting Your Homes Air Quality - Salem, OR
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the earth's soil. Over time, Radon is capable of entering into homes through cracks in the foundation or openings around pipes. This is extremely dangerous because it is not supposed to be breathed in and can result in major health concerns. Studies from the Environmental Protection Agency have expressed that breathing in any Radon levels at 4.0 pCi/L or above is equivalent as smoking 8 cigarettes a day and receiving 200 chest x-rays a year. It is known as the "silent killer" because Radon has been linked to over 20,000 lung-cancer related deaths each year. At John's Waterproofing, we want to ensure all homes are protected and healthy so we offer a Radon Mitigation System. This is done by first installing a Radon PVC pipe on the inside of the home in the lowest point. A hole is dug for the pipe to reach the soil and be able to depressurize the soil beneath the home so the gas can be redirected. From the outside of the home, a hole is drilled into the foundation to connect to the PVC pipe and then to the outdoor fan system. It creates a suction point so that the fan can pull the radon from the soil through the pipe and out above the home. This creates proper ventilation to keep the gas from entering inside the home and being inhaled. Once the full Radon Mitigation System is installed, the homes occupants can be protected from breathing in the Radon gas and avoid those health risks.
No Radon Mitigation = At Risk.
If the Radon levels in the soil surrounding your home are tested at 4.0 pCi/L or higher, that means you are at risk of inhaling the radioactive gas and the health risks it causes.
PVC Pipe Pulling Radon from Soil.
This PVC pipe is installed at the lowest point inside the home where it depressurizes the soil so that the gas can be redirected away from the home.
Before Mitigation is Installed.
Before the Radon Mitigation System is installed we have to drill a hole in the foundation so that the fan system can be perfectly aligned with where the PVC pipe is on the inside of the home.
Keeping Homeowners Safe from Radon.
Once the hole is drilled and the fan system is installed, it can pull the Radon gas from the soil and push it out above the home. This prevents the gas from getting in the living spaces and being breathed in by its occupants.
