Sump Pumps Photo Album: Water Puddling in the Crawl Space - Salem, OR
After noticing strange smells in their home, this homeowner decided to inspect their crawl space and see if they could identify where it was coming from. To their surprise, they found that their crawl space was covered with standing water that was ruining their vapor barrier and absorbing into the wooden posts. They decided to call John's Waterproofing about what options they had to resolve this issue. We informed them that the best long-term solution would be fully encapsulating the crawl space. Since this was an issue that the homeowners weren't prepared for, they decided that a Pipe Pump Plastic system would be the quickest method in removing the standing water until they were ready to encapsulate. To begin the Pipe Pump Plastic system, we first needed to remove the damaged vapor barrier so we could have a clear space to install drainage and get the water out. The drainage system involves digging a trench along the interior perimeter of the crawl space and laying a perforated pipe in it. This pipe is designed with little holes so that water can easily filter in and have a safe passageway to exit the space. The perforated pipe then connects to a SuperSump Plus sump pump which takes the collected water and securely pushes it out of the crawl space and away from the homes foundation. Once drainage is installed and the standing water can be safely drained out, then we installed a new 6 mil vapor barrier. This liner goes along the base, up the foundation walls, and between the footing and wooden posts to isolate and protect against water damage. The vapor barrier is overlapped at each seam to ensure water won't be able to seep over top of it. Now that this waterproofing system is fully installed, the homeowner can enjoy the benefits of a dry and healthy home again.
Debris Covered Vapor Barrier.
When dirt and debris is covering the vapor barrier like this it indicates that there has been some water intrusion and brought in sediment from outside.
Standing Water in the Crawl Space.
The puddling water on top of the vapor barrier can have negative affects on the homes health as it evaporates into the air and increases humidity.
Step 1: Pipe.
Laying the perforated pipe is the first step in this process. It allows for a safe passageway for water to be collected and flow through to exit the crawl space.
Step 2: Pump.
The SuperSump Plus sump pump takes all the water collected from the pipe and safely pushes it out of the crawl space and away from the homes foundation.
Step 3: Plastic.
A new 6 mil vapor barrier is installed to prevent future water from being able to seep up into the crawl space.
